Keystone Academy Beijing was scheduled to resume for its second semester of the year on Monday, February 3, after the Lunar New Year break.  The outbreak in full of COVID-19 during the holiday prevented that.  To add to this complexity, many teachers were in different parts of China or the world, unable to return. The school leadership quickly organized crisis groups to tackle different areas of school operations.  The Head of School announced what has since become a mantra: “Campus is closed, but school is open!”.  Teaching and learning began online, under the coordination of the academic crisis taskforce. On Monday, February 3, all teachers participated in online training sessions using the Microsoft Teams platform.  On the next day it was the turn of students and their parents for similar training.  On Wednesday, February 5, online schooling for all 1470 students in grades K-12 began.

From the first day of this new endeavor, our faculty and staff have attended daily training from our Digital Innovation and Learning Coaches, supported by our IT experts.  This was difficult in the beginning, where some students did not readily have access to needed resources or internet access and teachers were also working with new resources. Since week one, however, the online discussions have become more engaging, allowing teachers and students to create connections with classmates and real-world issues, and challenge students with opportunities. Teachers are creating lessons that go beyond screen time.  Hands-on learning is still integral to our program from In-the-Kitchen Science Experiments to Papyrus Making like the ancient Egyptians, to give two examples. Some students have appreciated discussions when they could pose their own questions and develop their own tech skills rather than just respond to questions developed by the teacher.

We also take an optimist to look at a threat like COVID-19 as an opportunity. Unexpected positives keep popping up. The Center for Student Development has found ways to connect with students who are struggling with the self-management required for independent online learning.  Pastoral care is a particular concern when we know that students are stressed about working independently, missing their friends, and wondering about the unknown virus.  Secondary school advisors are in contact with their 6 to 8 advisees almost daily, sharing fun as well as frustrations, and primary homeroom teachers discuss family interactions and relationships with their young charges, emphasizing our school values.  The Student Life office has set up a Chat Zone where students can talk to all their classmates. This is also an opportunity to practice responsible and kind online socializing. Teachers are able to have a mix of face-to-face contact with their students, and virtual connections through chats or email.

Engagement from parents in online learning has turned out to be essential. Parents’ roles were at times confused during the first week. Some of their actions hindered their children from independent learning.  Matching the objectives of the parents and the teachers was helped through communications with the PTA Committee and regular daily bulletins to keep parents up to date about when their input might be necessary.

• 通过每个人平时的学习与训练,让学生们具备所需要的知识与能力;

• 校方要做好调整与随时重新开始的准备,保持随机应变的敏锐度;

• 我们遇事要带着简单、乐观、有激情的心态出发;

• 追求真实的沟通;

Some clear lessons learned have emerged.  Here are just five:

• Equip everyone with the skills and knowledge they will need, through mandated and precise training;

• Prepare to be flexible or to start again, because even the most careful plans will need adjustment;

• Start simple, while being positive and encouraging;

• Make sure that connections and discussions are authentic;

• Share generously and lean on each other.
